 Martyr's Day (Shaheed Diwas) 2023: Date, History, Significance and Why is it Celebrated in India

Martyr's Day or Shaheed Diwas is an important observance in India that is held every year on 23rd March to pay tribute to the sacrifice of three brave freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the country's independence. The three revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru were hanged to death on this day in 1931 by the British colonial rulers.


History of Shaheed Diwas


Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru were leading figures of the Indian freedom movement who were inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and the nationalist ideals of the Indian National Congress. However, they were also critical of Gandhi's non-violent approach and believed that a more militant strategy was necessary to overthrow British rule in India.


The trio was involved in several acts of revolutionary violence against the British, including the assassination of a British police officer in 1928. They were arrested and charged with murder, and after a highly publicized trial, they were sentenced to death. Despite widespread protests and appeals for clemency, the British authorities went ahead with the execution of the three revolutionaries on 23rd March 1931.

Celebrations of Shaheed Diwas

The national flag is flown at half-mast, and a two-minute silence is observed in memory of the martyrs.


In schools, colleges, and other public institutions, special events and programs are organized to honor the memory of the martyrs and educate people about the significance of their sacrifice. Patriotic songs, speeches, and cultural programs are organized to instill a sense of national pride and unity among the people.
